Resan som började 2020 går äntligen mot sitt slut
Det är inte ofta en nyhet känns som ett helt decennium av väntan kulminerar på en och samma gång, men det är precis vad som händer med Final Fantasy VII Revelation. Under PlayStations State of Play i september bekräftade Square Enix äntligen releasedatumet för trilogins tredje och sista kapitel: 8 april 2027 – passande nog mitt under det 30:e jubileumsåret för originalspelet från 1997.
För oss som vuxit upp med den gula "Buster Sword"-logotypen och minns Midgars neonbelysta gator är det här stort. Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) och Rebirth (2024) har redan samlat på sig en hög med Game of the Year-utmärkelser, och nu ska Square Enix knyta ihop säcken med Cloud, Tifa, Barret och resten av AVALANCHE i en storm mot Sephiroth och de katastrofala Weapons som vaknat till liv för att skydda planeten.
Vad händer i spelet?
Final Fantasy VII Revelation continues from the events of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (2024), concluding the overarching narrative first introduced in Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020). All three games reimagine the story, characters and world of the original Final Fantasy VII (1997). Berättelsen tar vid precis där Rebirth slutade, och enligt utvecklarna kommer spelarna äntligen få besöka två platser som fansen längtat efter sedan Remake: the party's visit to both the Shinra-occupied nation of Wutai and Rocket Town, both of which appeared in the original game's story prior to the Forgotten City, will be prominently featured after their absences from Rebirth.
En av de stora nyheterna är hur fritt man nu kan utforska planeten. Director Naoki Hamaguchi appeared on camera to introduce the rest of the trailer, and we learn more about how Cloud and Co. will jump from the Highwind airship and parachute down to the planet below, Fortnite-style. To head to a new location, pilot the Highwind there in real time, and when you're ready to jump, hop on out and parachute down to the ground below. Luftskeppet Highwind blir alltså inte bara ett transportmedel utan en central del av hur man navigerar en i princip gränslös värld.
Och för den som undrar om de klassiska superbossarna är tillbaka – oroa dig inte. The gamescom trailer also showcased the powerful new Summon Typhon and open-world exploration via parachute, grappling hook and Chocobo mounts, plus Cloud and Tifa in their Warrior and Black Mage FITS. A late-game element of the original Final Fantasy VII, the Weapons return in reimagined glory as standout battles in Final Fantasy VII Revelation, some of which appear in ultra-challenging endgame battles as an homage to their original forms.
Samlarens dröm – och plånboksmardröm
Här kommer den riktigt roliga delen för oss på PAL Retro. Square Enix har gått all-in på fysiska samlarutgåvor, och det är inget för den sparsamma. The Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Collector's Edition release date is Thursday, April 8, 2027, and it will cost $349.99. Before you wince at that price, the special edition is fully packed with physical collectibles and in-game digital items.
Stjärnan i showen är utan tvekan statyn. The main attraction is a high-quality premium statue featuring Cloud, Zack, and Sephiroth. Each character has a separate wilderness-inspired base, allowing you to display the trio together as a single scene or individually. Enligt GamesRadar är figurerna imponerande detaljerade trots sin kompakta storlek: This is a statue featuring Cloud, Zack, and Sephiroth (who are 6.7 in, 7.1 in, and 7.9 inches tall, respectively), all posing with their weapons next to each other.
Utöver statyn innehåller paketet en rejäl dos nostalgi och lyx. The Collector's Edition also includes the physical Deluxe Edition of FF7 Revelation, which comes with the full game, a 120-page hardcover art book, a mini soundtrack CD, and an exclusive SteelBook case. Konstboken är dessutom något extra – a hardcover art book featuring a wealth of artwork from FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION, including key visuals, character designs, summons, enemies, locations, items, and more, presented across 120 pages. The book also features a special foreword from Producer Yoshinori Kitase.
Det finns dock en hake för PC-spelare: This collector's edition is only available for console players, with Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5 being the only options. So if you want to play the game on Steam, you might have to grab a console copy to get this statue. Och som grädde på moset gäller begränsad upplaga: Square Enix has confirmed that the $349.99 bundle will be available in limited quantities exclusively through the Square Enix e-Store.
